⚔️ BEHIND THE SCENES: NEW WORLDS, NEW SHELVES & TWO NEW ALLIES ⚔️
Fallout and Bolt Action are moving onto the table, the Legion Gaming store is taking shape, and our new commission-painter directory already has its first two studios — while Lewis continues to be distracted by dwarfs.
⚔️ BEHIND THE SCENES: NEW WORLDS, NEW SHELVES & TWO NEW ALLIES ⚔️
Apparently, announcing that Legion Comps was “going full hobby” was taken by both of us as permission to start another six things at once.
Since our last proper update, Bob has been wrestling with store pages, Lewis has been comparing post-apocalyptic wastelands with Second World War battlefields, more Warhammer goodies have appeared, and the Iron Warriors painting guide has suffered a serious — but entirely foreseeable — dwarf-related delay.
So, here is what has actually been happening behind the scenes.
☢️ FALLOUT, BOLT ACTION AND MORE THINGS TO PUT ON THE TABLE
We have been working through our first Fallout ideas and looking carefully at which Modiphius starter sets, factions and bundles would make genuinely good prizes.
The important bit is that we do not want to add a different game simply so we can say that we stock it. The prize still needs to feel complete, useful and exciting when it reaches the winner. A lonely expansion box that requires another £150 of purchases before it can be used is not much of a prize.
Bolt Action is getting the same treatment. We are looking at starter sets such as Band of Brothers, alongside future army bundles and other ways of giving somebody a proper route into the game rather than one random box and a polite wave in the direction of the rulebook.
There will still be plenty of Warhammer as well. Kill Team, boxed armies, Black Library collectables, unusual display pieces and new releases are all still firmly part of the plan.
In other words: the Legion is expanding into new systems, but we have not forgotten where most of us first lost control of our spare room.
🛒 BOB IS BUILDING THE SHOP
The Legion Gaming store is now taking shape behind the scenes.
Bob is doing the sensible technical work: building pages, organising products and trying to make the whole thing straightforward to use.
Lewis is helping by repeatedly asking whether we can add another range.
The answer is normally, “Yes, but please let me finish this page first.”
The plan is still to bring together:
Brand-new sealed games and miniature sets
Hobby products and useful supplies
Selected pre-painted miniatures
Table-ready pieces for people who do not enjoy painting, do not have the time, or find the physical side of painting difficult
Products from more than one corner of the tabletop hobby
It is a work in progress and we are not going to pretend that everything will appear on day one. We would rather build something clear, useful and trustworthy than upload thousands of products nobody can find.
🖌️ THE COMMISSION-PAINTER DIRECTORY HAS ITS FIRST TWO NAMES
We are also building a free platform to help hobbyists find commission painters and painting studios.
There are some brilliant artists working across Warhammer 40,000, Age of Sigmar, Horus Heresy, Fallout, historical games and countless other systems. Finding the right person, however, can be surprisingly difficult — particularly when portfolios, prices, availability and contact details are scattered across several social platforms.
Our aim is to give painters a proper profile and give hobbyists one clear place to discover them, view their work and find somebody whose style suits the project.
The first two studios to agree to join us are:
Unrelenting Hobby — The Unrelenting Brush
Chris started The Unrelenting Brush in 2018 and has since developed it into Team Unrelenting, bringing several painters together under one studio. Their focus is fast, effective painting to a strong tabletop standard, from individual characters through to genuinely enormous armies. They also produce free hobby content, offer tuition and run painting workshops — exactly the sort of practical, community-minded approach we want the directory to showcase.
ZPaints UK
Dan runs ZPaints as a two-person commission studio in Dudley. Their growing portfolio covers infantry, characters, vehicles, monsters and larger centrepieces, with clearly presented painting options and pricing. Dan contacted us after seeing the original call for painters and immediately understood what we are trying to build: a useful place where genuine studios can be seen and hobbyists can find the right help for their collection.
Both will be among the first painter profiles on the platform, and we are already speaking to others.
The detailed profile and safety system is still being built. Each studio will remain independent, and customers will be able to review its work and contact it directly. We will publish clear guidance alongside the directory so people know what to check before sending money or miniatures anywhere.
This is not about turning painting into another competition. It is about making talented people easier to find and making the hobby more accessible to people who want painted miniatures but cannot — or simply do not want to — paint everything themselves.
🔩 THE IRON WARRIORS GUIDE IS STILL COMING
For the avoidance of doubt, the Iron Warriors painting guide has not been abandoned.
Lewis has been working through the armour, metallics, grime, hazard stripes and practical steps needed to make the guide genuinely useful for an entire army rather than one suspiciously perfect display model.
Then the Khazalite Holds arrived.
This created a brief and completely unavoidable period of dwarf-related research.
The Holds army set has been far too tempting, the miniatures are excellent, and apparently “I only need to test one colour” can still become an entire evening at the painting desk.
The Iron Warriors will return after this short, heavily armoured and extremely bearded interruption.
IRON WITHIN. IRON WITHOUT.
Eventually.
⚔️ WHAT WE ARE ACTUALLY BUILDING
Competitions remain at the heart of Legion Comps, but we never wanted the site to stop there.
We are trying to build a wider hobby home with:
Competitions across Warhammer, Fallout, Bolt Action, Konflikt ’47 and more
Genuine product photography and official, unaltered product imagery
Practical painting guides based on real projects
A carefully built hobby store
A free way to discover commission painters
More reasons to visit even when you are not entering a draw
Some of it will arrive quickly. Some of it will take longer. Some of it will probably involve Bob staring at a screen while Lewis appears with another box and says, “I’ve had an idea.”
That is the honest version of building Legion Comps: one useful addition, one painted miniature and one questionable new project at a time.
By hobbyists, for hobbyists.
Even when one of those hobbyists is supposed to be painting Iron Warriors and is actually painting dwarfs.
Come and join the Legion. ⚔️
